The MONPE Series: Experience the Depth of Kurume Kasuri

These monpe are designed to convey the breadth and depth of Kurume Kasuri—qualities that cannot be fully expressed by standard monpe alone. This is the “Iroha” series. For this release , we selected an exclusive pattern from GOOD DESIGN STORE TOKYO by NOHARA from among the many available fabrics to create these pieces.

Kurume Kasuri Is Not a Print

Kurume Kasuri features a wide variety of patterns and colors created through the “kukuri” dyeing technique. Since the level of labor required varies by technique, the price of the fabric also differs depending on the pattern.

○ Solid Color… A single-color fabric woven from yarn that does not undergo the “kukuri” process.
○ Warp Kasuri (Tategasuri)… Kasuri in which patterns are created by dyeing only the warp threads using the “kukuri” technique.
○ Weft Kasuri (Yokogasuri)… A type of kasuri in which patterns are created by tie-dyeing only the weft threads.
● Warp-and-Weft Kasuri (Tate-Yoko-Gasuri)… A type of kasuri in which patterns are created by tie-dyeing both the warp and weft threads.
○ Stripes… A pattern formed by arranging warp threads that do not undergo the tie-dyeing process.
○ Check… A pattern formed by arranging threads—which do not undergo the tying process—as both warp and weft.
○ Bunjin Kasuri… A type of kasuri in which the woven fabric is dyed once; when the fabric is unraveled, the threads are finely dyed in different colors. This unraveled yarn is then used as the weaving yarn.
○ Tsumami-zome… A dyeing technique using tie-dyeing that employs two or more colors. Color is brushed into the areas left white by the tie-dyeing process.

Sakata Orimono (Textiles · Kurume Kasuri / Hirokawa Town, Fukuoka Prefecture)

Founded in 1948 and based in Hirokawa Town, Yame District, Sakata Textiles began as a weaving workshop that supplied Kurume Kasuri fabric and bolts to wholesalers. However, as Western-style clothing became more prevalent, the company began developing its own original women’s clothing line using Kurume Kasuri in the 1990s.Kazuo Sakata, now the third-generation owner, has moved beyond the traditional navy-and-white kasuri to experiment with a variety of colors and patterns,In 2013, he launched the company’s own brand, “TUGU.”, which weaves together the short leftover threads—which inevitably remain during the kasuri production process—one by one to create fabric, using it to produce original items such as clothing and accessories.Furthermore, since 2017, the company has participated in trade shows in New York City, among other initiatives, refusing to become complacent and continuing to take on new challenges to create Kurume Kasuri that meets modern needs.

“Farmers’ MONPE,” inspired by traditional monpe

These MONPE feature an overall loose fit, closely resembling the shape of traditional monpe. Compared to modern-style MONPE, they have a roomier fit around the hips and a wider silhouette from the knees down to the calves. They are recommended for those who prefer a loose fit, those who use them for work or exercise, and anyone who finds the narrow cut below the knees of modern-style MONPE uncomfortable.

The “Modern-Style MONPE” developed by Unagi no Nedoko features a sleek, slim fit around the hips and below the knees. In contrast, these “Farmers’ MONPE ” offer a roomier silhouette that more closely resembles traditional monpe. They are the ultimate in relaxed wear—allowing you to appreciate the history of the garment while enjoying a comfortable fit without feeling constricted.
