Shinjo Higashiyama Pottery, Yabei Kiln ( Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture )

The craftsmen of Shinjo Higashiyama-yaki, which has continued as the official kiln of the Shinjo Tozawa Domain since its opening in 1837, have created a functional and simple shape for daily use by utilizing the "namako" glaze, a family tradition said to be the color of the snowy haze of Dewa.

If you send us a broken piece, we will send you a new one for free the first time.

Please note that ceramic products tend to differ in color and pattern from the images shown here due to climate change, the way the kiln is fired, and the characteristics of the glaze. Also, because they are handmade, there may be variations in size and thickness, as well as unevenness.

Size may vary depending on the position of the glaze in a high-temperature furnace.
Thickness and unevenness are the result of accidental glaze application by the craftsman.
The roundness of the interior bottom was devised to create a good coffee foam.

Shinjohigashiyama-yaki

Shinjoh Higashiyama-yaki Yaheigama has maintained its family tradition of producing ceramics for daily use as the official kiln of the Shinjo-Tozawa clan since its opening in 1837, using the abundant clay on the premises and various glazes handed down in the family, including Namako glaze, which is said to be the color of the shadow of snow in the Dewa area. We are making every effort to produce our pottery.

Shinjo Higashiyama Pottery, Yabei Kiln

Shozangama Kiln, Watanabe Tobo, miraculously discovered in 1975 the ruins of a kiln of Hachinohe Pottery, which had been fired in Kanisawaka in Hachinohe City until the end of the Edo period. Using the unearthed pottery shards as a reference, he created his own unique Hachinohe Pottery. His unique green glaze is said to be the color of beech nurtured by the great nature of Aomori, or the color of seaweed rubbed by the rough waves of Sanriku.
