Kiln potters (craftsmen) from various regions of Japan produce the same design using local materials. This mug has an internal shape that creates a fine foam (crema) that locks in the aroma of the coffee.

Tamba Ware

Mugs made by Megumi Ohgami of Okuma Kiln, one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, Tamba-yaki, are a product of sensitivity that shines through in the traditional techniques. The hand-applied shinogi patterns and soft colors give the mugs a three-dimensional feel and high quality.

The "shinogi" pattern, which became a new traditional technique of Tamba-yaki, was brought by Kazutaka Ikuta, a pupil of potter Kanjiro Kawai, a leader of folk art, who devoted himself to the revival of Tamba-yaki after the war, and is applied by hand in a symmetrical manner to the lower outer shape of each mug.
The base of the mug is covered with a white matte glaze made from straw ashes. The color of the ridges on the top of the mug and on the "shinogi" emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the "shinogi" in the soft expression of the white matte base, and accentuates the high quality and presence of the mug.

Tamba-yaki

Tamba-yaki is said to have been established between the Heian and Kamakura periods, and is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, along with Echizen, Seto, Tokoname, Shigaraki, and Bizen. The pottery is produced in the Imada area of Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, which is blessed with abundant nature, and each kiln handles the entire process from clay making to firing. In 1978, the name "Tamba Tachikake Pottery" was designated as a traditional handicraft by the Japanese government.

Okuma Kiln (Tamba Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture)

Okuma Kiln is located in the center of Tamba Pottery Township. Currently, three artists from two generations, father and son, are making pottery. While carrying on the tradition, they do not go against the current. The pottery is made with the clay slowly and steadily to preserve and hand down the tradition to future generations.
