MURAI STOOL / S-5026TK-NT / Tendo Mokuko

A gem that has been manufactured unchanged since 1965.

The winning entry in the "First Tendo Woodworking Furniture Design Competition" held in 1961 was commercialized and added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Three pieces of molded plywood of the same shape are combined without metal fittings to create a simple and beautiful form. The beautiful grain of the teak wood merges toward the center of the piece, and the details of the finish are meticulously executed.

The top surface is designed to be horizontal no matter which side is placed face down, and can be used as a chair, side table, or even stacked as a shelf. It is a stool that stimulates the user's imagination.

Reiko Tanabe

Born in Tokyo in 1934, Tanabe graduated from Joshibi University of Art and Design in 1957 and worked at Kenji Fujimori Design Office before winning an honorable mention for her Murai stool in the first Tendo Mokko Design Competition in 1961 while working at Matsuda Heita Design. Murai is named after Mr. Tanabe's maiden name.
He also taught at Joshibi University of Art and Design, his alma mater, to nurture the next generation of designers.
