Farmers’ MONPE Iroha Horizontal Kasuri Marumaru Black and White / Eel’s Bed
The MONPE Series: Experience the Depth of Kurume Kasuri
These monpe are designed to convey the breadth and depth of Kurume Kasuri—qualities that cannot be fully expressed by standard monpe alone. This is the “Iroha” series. For this release , we selected an exclusive pattern from GOOD DESIGN STORE TOKYO by NOHARA from among the many available fabrics to create these pieces.

Kurume Kasuri Is Not a Print
Kurume Kasuri features a wide variety of patterns and colors created through the “kukuri” dyeing technique. Since the level of labor required varies by technique, the price of the fabric also differs depending on the pattern.
○ Solid Color… A single-color fabric woven from yarn that does not undergo the “kukuri” process.
○ Warp Kasuri (Tate-gasuri)… Kasuri in which patterns are created by dyeing only the warp threads using the “kukuri” technique.
● Weft Kasuri (Yokogasuri)… A type of kasuri in which patterns are created by tie-dyeing only the weft threads.
○ Warp-and-Weft Kasuri (Tate-Yoko-Gasuri)… A type of kasuri in which both the warp and weft threads are tied and dyed separately to create a pattern.
○ Stripes… A pattern formed by arranging warp threads that do not undergo the tie-dyeing process.
○ Check… A pattern formed by arranging threads—which do not undergo the tying process—as both warp and weft.
○ Bunjin Kasuri… A type of kasuri in which the woven fabric is dyed once; when the fabric is unraveled, the threads are finely dyed in different colors. These unraveled threads are then used as weaving yarns.
○ Tsumami-zome… A dyeing technique using tie-dyeing that employs two or more colors. Color is brushed into the areas left white by the tie-dyeing process.

■ Marugame Kasuri Textile Factory (Textiles · Kurume Kasuri / Hirokawa Town, Fukuoka Prefecture)
Founded in 1868, the company was renamed from Maruyama Textiles to Marugame Kasuri Textile Factory after World War II and is now run by Shigetoshi Maruyama, the fifth-generation owner. The company currently operates a store in Tokyo and handles the entire process—from weaving its own fabrics into clothing to selling them in its own store—in-house.After graduating from an agricultural high school, Shigetoshi studied at a vocational school for fashion design. Although he lost the factory and looms in a fire in 2013, driven by his strong determination to handle fabric production in-house, he acquired new looms, rebuilt the factory, and resumed operations in 2014.
He creates enjoyable designs—including innovative patterns that ingeniously utilize leftover weft threads, pop and original motifs such as lotus roots and musical notes, and patterns incorporating traditional large-scale printing techniques—while crafting fabrics tailored to his creative vision, thereby conveying the charm of Kurume Kasuri.

■ “Farmers’ MONPE,” Inspired by Traditional Monpe
These MONPE feature an overall relaxed fit, closely resembling the shape of traditional monpe. Compared to modern-style MONPE, they have a roomier fit around the hips and a wider silhouette from the knees down to the calves. They are recommended for those who prefer a relaxed fit, those who use them for work or exercise, and those who find the narrow cut below the knees of modern-style MONPE uncomfortable.

The “Modern-Style MONPE” developed by Unagi no Nedoko features a sleek, slim fit around the hips and below the knees. In contrast, these “Farmers’ MONPE ” offer a more relaxed silhouette, closer to traditional monpe. They are the ultimate in relaxed wear—allowing you to learn about their history while enjoying a comfortable fit without feeling constricted.
