Odawara has been a lacquerware production area since the Muromachi Period.Odawara lacquerware and Hakone-zaikuwoodworkusing the "rokuro-hiki" and "suri-urushi" techniques, which take advantage of the beauty of the natural grain of the Hakone mountain range , are designated as traditional handicrafts.

Sonobe Sangyo hopes to continue the handcrafts using beautiful Japanese wood as a factory-based handicraftsman, from the raw wood to the finished product, while maintaining a realistic price by mass-producing them on a certain scale.They are making products with all the skills they have inherited, considering the design and usability.

The "Meiki Bowl," which offers a taste of Japanese fine wood, won the Good Design Award in 1966 and the Long Life Design Award in 2021. The Nitori Plate, born from the Odawara traditional Nitori tray, received the Good Design Award in 2019.
